It seems that everyday we awake to news reports about protests in some part of the world. From the Arab countries and what is called the “Arab Spring” to London, to New York, to Vancouver and so on…
Is there a relationship between all these geopolitically diverse statements? I think so!
First of all, the protests are being headed and joined by either the non-ruling class (Arab countries) or the middle class (developed countries). Why now?
Two reasons.
First of all we live in a world of instantaneous information – a world created by the troika of Microsoft, Apple and Google. There is no time lag, there is nothing that is not known and there is nothing that is not given an audience (no matter how correct the facts are!)
In the Arab Spring – the non-governing, non-royal population is finally connected to a world that highlights for them their poor economic plight, social inequality and the corruption perpetuated by their leaders for decades.
In the developed world we are still recovering from the Housing Mortgage Meltdown. Many people have suffered either as a result of loss of wealth, pension growth or jobs. However, the people who created the Meltdown are still enjoying not only their wealth that was to many, fraudulently created, but their freedom as well. So to middle class Canada and America a message has been sent – “GREED IMPUGNITY IS ALIVE AND WELL”!
We live in a world of increasing social inequality and a growing divide in income ranges. An extra-ordinary amount of wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few (many of whom take great pleasure in flaunting it). Worth thinking about!
